Caleb Allen writes a two-page letter to to his congressman requesting a posting as a postmaster in New London Connecticut.  Letter is posted FREE indicating Allen may already be acting postmaster.  Allen includes references in his letter and each has an "x" beside it indicating the references checked.  Allen's name is annoted in the same pen on a fold. Did not find him in a list of New London postmasters, so his letter did not work.  Elisha Haley (1776–1860) was a U.S. Representative from Connecticut. He was born in Groton where he attended the common schools. He engaged in agricultural pursuits. Haley served in the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1820, 1824, 1826, 1829, 1833, and 1834. He was member of the Connecticut Senate in 1830 and also served as a captain in the Connecticut militia. He was elected as a Jacksonian to the 24th Congress and reelected as a Democrat to the 25th Congress (1835–1839). In Congress, he served as chairman, Committee on Public Expenditures. After leaving Congress, he engaged in civil engineering. Light, but full, New London postmark. Tear where seal was broken does not affect text.
