ROSENHEIM GERMANY 1947 POSTAL HISTORY COVER WITH AMERICAN ZONE OCCUPATION STAMPS, CIVIL CENSOR STAMP & TAPE, OTTO EDENHARTER MARK AND EDENHARTER INN SEALS Excellent and interesting cover. Post-World-War-II American Occupation of Germany stamps along with Civil Censorship seal 11119. Censor tape. Reverse shows cover's sender was Otto Edenharter, Wasserburg-Inn-Stadt. Otto-Erich Edenharter starred in over 50 film and television productions, including in the GDR crime series blue light , Police 110 , and the prosecutor has the floor . Wasserburg am Inn is a town in Rosenheim district in Upper Bavaria, Germany. The historic centre is a peninsula formed by the meandering Inn River. Many Medieval structures remain intact, giving the city a unique air. |

BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS 1868 FANCY CANCEL COVER + 2 LETTERS HENRY HILL (AMERICAN TRACT SOCIETY) AND LOVETT MORSE (TAUNTON NATIONAL BANK) This lot contains three items. First, a pink American Tract Society business envelope with a cachet and Boston postmark with pie wedge cancel on a Scott #65 stamp. It is opened roughly at the top and has no back flap. Second is a letter on ATS stationery from Henry Hill, ATS treasurer offering to pay Taunton Bank director Lovett Morse interest due on a building loan to his son if Morse will forego foreclosure proceedings. Third is the reply from Morse, explaining his position in the matter and setting down reasons for his decision whether or not to accept Hill’s “proposition”. The winner of the lot gets all the details. Very interesting reading. Lovett Morse was a director of the Taunton National Bank as well as a director of the Taunton Gas-Light Company. Born in Taunton, on February 25, 1810, he married Sally Morse and they had five children. Henry Hill – 1795-1892 – Born in Newburgh, NY. In 1809 he became clerk for Hill & Smith, 100 Wall Street, New York City. In 1817 he went on business to Chili acting as U. S. Counsel for Valparaiso and Santiago. He was treasurer of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions from 1822 to 1854 for 11 years was a member of its Prudential Committee. He was treasurer of the American Tract Society, Boston, for nine years. The American Tract Society (ATS) is a nonprofit, nonsectarian but evangelical organization founded on May 11, 1825 in New York City for the purpose of publishing and disseminating Christian literature. ATS traces its lineage back through the New York Tract Society (1812) and the New England Tract Society (1814) to the Religious Tract Society of London, begun in 1799. Over the years, ATS has produced and distributed many millions of pieces of literature. |

NEWPORT NEW HAMPSHIRE 1830 POSTAL HISTORY STAMPLESS FOLDED LETTER TO POSTMASTER, WENDELL HARBOR NEW HAMPSHIRE Brief note addressed to John P. Knowlton, Wendell Harbor, NH, postmaster regarding a debt of $1,000. A representative of Knowlton apparently tried to collect the money from the writer, Peter Sargent, but to no avail and Sargent is writing to say he hopes to have money soon and "you can have it". Light but full Newport NH postmark along with large red numeral 5. Very good condition. Wendell Harbor is an rare and interesting address since it was an early name for what is now Sunapee Harbor. According to historical records: "Like many other towns, Sunapee one went through name changes before its incorporation in 1781: Saville in 1768, Corey's Town, and then Wendell, for one of the Masonian Proprietors, John Wendell. The marsh near Sunapee Middle High School still bears Wendell's name. The name Sunapee was substituted for Wendell by the legislature in 1850." Captain John P. Knowlton, a retired merchant of Sunapee, was born in that town, October 10, 1821, son of Samuel and Betsey (Pike) Knowlton. The grandfather, Robert Knowlton, was one of the pioneer settlers of New London, N.H. Samuel Knowlton was a farmer in Sunapee. He was also engaged in hewing lumber. John P. Knowlton, at six feet, six inches, was one of the tallest men in the area. He received his education in town schools and took up farming. Subsequently he became interested in a mercantile business, and entered into partnership with his brother in 1844. He bought out his brother’s interest, and went on as sole proprietor. In 1862, he retired. In 1870, he erected Knowlton Block. He was a Director of the First National Bank of Newport, N.H., for several years. He was first Postmaster of Sunapee and held the office for 11 years. On January 4, 1848, Governor Jared B. Williams created him Captain of the militia company called the Sunapee Guards. For four years he was Town Clerk, and for one year Town Treasurer. In 1856-57 he served as State Representative, and he was a Justice of the Peace. Captain Knowlton was married October 23, 1848, to Abby S. Morgan. |
