BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS 1847 STAMPLESS FOLDED LETTER TO NEW YORK CITY - POSTAL-HISTORY BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS 1847 STAMPLESS FOLDED LETTER TO NEW YORK CITY

August 2, 1847 stampless folded letter from Allen & Beal, Boston furniture sellers, to George Johnson in New York, pleading with him to fill a furniture order they had sent to him some time back.  Apparently Johnson has ignored numerous requests to fill the order. Below is information from the 1849 edition of “The Stranger’s Guide to the City of Boston”.

ALLEN & BEAL,

NOS. 1, 2, 3 & 4 HOLMES'S BLOCK, HAYMARET SQUARE.

This house has been in existence for several years, and now enjoys an enviable prosperity. Allen & Beal are distinguished for the extent, variety and excellence of their stock. They are second to no furniture dealers in the city, in these or other particulars. A glance at their vast and rich assortment of furniture, feathers, mattresses, and looking-glasses, will impress the beholder with admiration. They are adapted particularly for the wholesale trade, as well as for shipping, hotel and family use. They have a remarkably large assortment of looking-glasses. Messrs. A. & B. keep constantly on hand and import hair-seating, curled hair, looking-glass plates, webbing, sofa springs, plushes, and cabinet-makers' trimmings, of all varieties ; and a very large stock of sofas, looking-glasses, and rocking and mahogany chairs ; and the fact that their stock is so very ample, affords them better facilities for selling at moderate prices. Their rooms, in Holmes's Block, are very fine and spacious. Here also may be found an extensive assortment of Upholstery goods. We recommend purchasers to call upon Allen & Beal. They are large, honorable and enterprising traders, and their terms are moderate.

WASHINGTON DC 1906 SPECIAL DELIVERY COVER. SUPER POSTAL MARKINGS.

If you collect postal markings, special delivery or just very interesting covers...this lot is for you. Absolutely super postal history item. This 1906 Boston cover was sent special delivery from Washington DC to Boston MA. On the face it has these postal markings: large double-line box with No Letter; fee claimed by office of first address; and the best feature -- a fee paid Boston time clock receiver mark with the Boston capital building as the hour hand of the clock! Check it out in the lower left corner of the cover. The December 31, 1906 appears to be a receiver from the insurance company addressee. The back features a Boston and Providence Railroad Post Office partial postmark. As you see from the scan, the cover has damage at the upper left corner and a small hole just below that. Cover shows normal wear for a cover of this early vintage. Nice E-6 special delivery stamp along with postal stationery of the time
